Teodorico

A dialogue between tradition and contemporary vision

Created by Alberto Biagetti and Laura Baldassari — both originally from Ravenna — Teodorico was created for the VIII Biennale di Mosaico Contemporaneo as a sculptural installation, where history flows into the present and tradition is re-imagined through design.

Teodorico draws inspiration from the red Egyptian porphyry basin preserved inside the Mausoleum of Ostrogoth king Teodorico in Ravenna, built around 520 CE. Carved from a single block of porphyry, this monumental vessel has always been regarded as an emblematic object, a symbol of purity and royal eternity, a place meant to represent the infinite rather than to contain it.

Teodorico pays homage to Theodoric the Great, transforming Ravenna’s Ostrogothic legacy into an intimate, reflective monument. Filled with water, it recalls the coin-tossing ritual as a quiet gesture of hope, memory, and connection.

For Biagetti and Baldassari, Ravenna is a place of memory and meaning. With Teodorico, they return to its timeless artistry, transforming it into a contemporary rite. Handcrafted by master mosaicist Marco Santi, the piece features a 3D-printed body covered in hand-cut glass tesserae, celebrating Ravenna’s Byzantine tradition with hand-cut glass tesserae passed down through generations.

Teodorico is currently part of the permanent collection at MAR – Museum of Art of the City of Ravenna.
