From sacred figures to screen stars, the idea of the icon has always mirrored society’s evolving identity. With the rise of cinema and television, icons have shaped the cultural, visual and sociological changes of their time.
In today’s world, the disproportionate use of social media has redefined fame, transforming anonymous nobodies into global stars with millions of followers.
Curated by Maria Chiara Valacchi at Cabinet Studiolo, in this exhibition Laura Baldassari investigates the difference between authentic and manufactured popularity in a scenographic duality where the benefit and dangers of icon worship coexist side by side.

At the centre stands Britney Spears, both symbol of the Teen Pop Idol and at the same time sacrificial victim of this system; reduced to a body, only recognisable by clothes and accessories.

From the monumental scale of the canvas to the screen of a smartphone – the true prize possession in contemporary society and today’s ultimate altars – the artwork reflects on how our devices offers a seductive stage for narcissistic performance.
